SEISMIC stations across the planet recorded a mysterious reading on 11th November, with characteristics that had “never been observed before”, according to American seismologist Göran Ekström.
The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) echoed has echoed his view, reporting through its social networks: “This signal is very different from the seismograms normally associated with earthquakes, having an oscillatory character that can be explained only by invoking a phenomenon of volcanic type.”
The epicentre of this unusual earthquake was located about 24 kilometres east of the Mayotte volcanic island, in the Indian Ocean, and the quake lasted 22 minutes.
In the same area, since last May, a series of earthquakes, with a magnitude of up to 5.8, have been recorded.
And, at the same time, the GPS stations deployed on Mayotte recorded a deformation of the terrain, which seems to indicate the emptying of a giant magmatic chamber (a large pool of liquid rock beneath the Earth’s surface) in the same area as the earthquakes, said an Involcan spokesperson
The waves, which vibrated through Africa, also crossed oceans, leaving signals throughout Chile, New Zealand, Canada and even Hawaii, which is almost 18,000km away from Mayotte, said National Geographic.
But for now, scientists have not been able to decipher what caused the tremor.
